Hi guys;

as usual story, my never ending projects are shelves full... and this was one of them I started to collect parts together for long.
as I packed all my models, this was also waiting for its turn to see some light for very long...

last week, I took it out and gave her a nice make up until next time the decals are ready....

so, as the story here is a bit old, my comments as well...

as usual, do not hesitate to comment and suggest Smile

This was started long ago...
and yes, the aim was to replicate the Evo5 1998 Sanremo car driven by Tommi Makinen

for this project this is our hero here.....
longgggg awaited evo5 front bumper printed in a very very very expensive, high tech 3D printer Razz
it's the future toy guys.....

I guess we still need some time for this future product...
seriously, the result is great but you still have to spend time on it...
but I am sure it's the future....

to replicate the front bumper correctly I also sacrifice the Autoart bumper to be a hero

as this 3d printed front bumper was a trial and development between me and the designer/printer guy there were some small adjustments needed...
but frankly, this was the first trial and it was almost perfect...
but I was so eager to not to wait for another 8 months Wink
so I decided to pull the plug and do my saw do the talking Wink

EAT my SAW

starting to take some shape....

due to some design errors, the bumper was not 100% correct. so, I had to reshape it. used polyester putty for extensions...

after many primer, putty, sanding and corrections... the bumper finally took its final shape and had her final grey primer...

wheels also took their cut...
Modification of the current 5 hole wheels... converted to 4 holes...

after long time she had been sitting on the shelves waiting for me to have inspiration, I finally give it a go last week and gave her grey and white primers first to prepare for further paint... Smile

1/18 Mitsubishi Evo 5, GpA 1998 Sanremo Tommi Makinen IMG_7257_zpsjrukf69o

painted all white and waiting for more colors to paint....

1/18 Mitsubishi Evo 5, GpA 1998 Sanremo Tommi Makinen IMG_7262_zps9bf3m7ye

and last night she put on her make up Wink

1/18 Mitsubishi Evo 5, GpA 1998 Sanremo Tommi Makinen IMG_7296_zpsvenukaor

decals should be the next step but artwork and printing has to be done first....
during this period I will try to do some small detailing such as correcting some small paint errors and detailing with some carbon decals etc...

until next time...

Loving your building as always Omer, nice subject too, has this really never been done to now in 1/18? Quite an important omission from the model makers!

Thank you very much David!
unfortunately, none of the manufacturers produced the Evo5 ever before in 1/18 scale...
but recently the TARMAC WORKS brand has developing the same car/rally in resin but I don't like resin that much so as I started 2 years ago, I am building my own Evo5 Smile

Very nice Omer, as usual with your projects!

May I ask you some questions about your painting process? Do you strip the model to bare metal before priming it or do you sand the original paint and as a base coat? Also what kind of paint do you use? I have a few 1:18 projects in standby while I'm trying to figure out the right way to paint them. Unlike for 1:43 models, I'm not confortable using acrylic spray cans as that paint is quite fragile and I would be afraid to damage it on big heavy metal models. I'm wondering how models are originally painted by the manufacturers because that paint is very durable.

glad you liked my projects.

regarding the paint, I guess the best solution should go to bare metal and use original car primers & paints.

but I don't do it that way since I am not that confident with the primers I can find here in China.... therefore, I prefer to sand down the original paint and then give it a Tamiya Grey Primer + White primers before the paint.
The color paints I am using are also from Tamiya TS series... and then finally I used Tamiya TS Clear Coats...

Like you said, these kind of modelling paints can be very fragile especially around the edges or door/trunk areas...
need to be careful and better not to go too thick... if any paint chips I try to use the same aerosol paint and with the help of a paint brushes I do some touch ups before the clear coat.... Clear coats basically helps the paint and decals to cover up nicely....

in between the grey primer & white primer I wait for at least a day for them to cure perfectly. and then I use Tamiya 2000 sand paper to smoothen the surface...
and then put on the paint..
after decal job I also use Tamiya TS Clear Coat to cover up and finish the model...

hope it helps, but as mentioned above be careful with the thick paint and paint chips...

let me know how it goes...
