It's a whole new world

I seem to come here in a very circuitous route.  

Since I was a little’un I've always watched all kinds of Motorsport (except F1).

I'm currently painting some 1/144 and 1/200 cars for 2 board games Rallyman and Formula D. This lead me to hunt the internet for resource material and I've come across some lovely examples of Rally cars in 1/18, 1/24, 1/43.
I'm very tempted to start a “little” collection but have no idea how the various manufacturers fit in the who to buy from and who to avoid list.
I’ll probably go for 1/43, just to save space, but the odd big one might appear.

So you’ll probably be sick of noob questions from me very quickly, I’ll try to keep them as least sensible

Welcome to this mental world of rally car collecting. Some say 1/43 are the best others say 1/18. I like a bit of both but am mainly 1/43.

There is a lot of makers of models out there from your mass producers to your code3 makers. It is what you want to pay for a model and how much you want a model really. I would pay top money if it was one i really want and was hard to get hold of, but then if it was a mass produced one, i would probably wait for the price to drop as they do quite often.

Makers are vast. Corgi do some which are ok. Trofeu are good but don't seem to release much these days. Ixo is one of the biggest knocking out alot of different varied models which are pretty good. The likes of Neo and others make resin models which are great but can be expensive.

Then you have your code3 builders which we have a few on this forum. They take a model of a car and will do a limited run of a car usually no more than fifty. They sell for £50 upwards, depending on base decals etc etc. All on her are excellent at what they do and i have had cars from many and can not fault them but this is the dearer end of the market but is the best end Thats why my wallet is always empty

Welcome to the Forum! Do have a look around, there are plenty of hints and tips, items for sale and events happening, so should keep you occupied and 'off the streets' for a few hours days!!

Personally, I only collect (and make) 1/43 scale models. These, to me, offer the best compromise between detail and space required. I have three wall cabinets at home with rally, rallycross, road and race models all of which are BL/ Austin Rover, MGRover and the companies that were absorbed by them. Others follow other makes, rally events or drivers. Some here only collect particular models they especially like. You can make of your collection what you want.

If in doubt, ask questions but above all, enjoy yourself.

There is a lot more to the forum once you become a paid member so dont fret that you cant see much at the moment.

I would definately get a few of the cheaper 1/43 models to begin with and take it from there. Once you get an idea of what kind of collection you would like then you can decide which direction you want to go.

There are some very knowledgeable people on here so almost question you have will be answered

welcome aboard m8, as said above there are no shortage of experts and brilliant modellers on here, plus very knowledgeable folk in the world of rallying....like brian above i specialise in 1:18, but whatever the scale, or material used, theres a place for it on here...

I started off collecting Irish 1/43 rally models when there were very few UK not to mention Irish models on the market.

There has been a deluge of models in the past 10 years so I am now concentrating on Rothmans Rally, BMW M3 rally and a combination of rally cars I have sat in myself (as co-driver) and local rally cars to me (In Cork ,Ireland).

Ebay is our happy hunting ground but there are models on sale here from time to time. Enjoy
