1/18 Russell Brooks - Ford Sierra Cosworth - Rally of the Lakes 1989

Couple of projects in the pipeline at the moment. This one has been ongoing for quite a while but getting the shade of yellow right has been tricky.
After talking to Peter at the model show he pointed me in the right direction. The one I will be modelling is Russells win on the Rally of the Lakes 1989 where he won the Irish Tarmac Championship and ties in with the a few other models I have in the collection from the ITC winners who also won in Kilarney. Its also a model that I drew the decals for in 1/43 so it made it easier to reuse the artwork.



Model will be based on the IXO Sierra Cosworth as it has much less detail than the Autoart, so is a lot easier to work on. (plus I only have the one which I dont want to strip) I do plan on adding some detail however such as bonnet pins and proper seat belts.



Will be using paints from the Holts paint range found in most found in most autofactors. Had originally planned on using the Heat for Hire paint set from Zeropaints but the colours are all wrong, but the Holts paints are quite good and pretty good value.

Brian, Just to add to the headache (if you wish). The car was in Eifel a few times with all the original decals on it. I took some detailed photos - so I can dig them out if you want including rear window decals that never appeared on the 1/43 version. Which reminds me 1/43 Sierra ..................

If you have any of the rear window Id be interested. Havnt seen any showing anything on the rear window.

Holts paints worked a dream on this one. After lots of masking tape, a few curses and touch ups, its finally painted.
Top Tip: use latex gloves to as a really quick way of masking off large areas. Might not be suitable for 1/43 but saved a ton of time on this one.

Next step is to add some silver decal strips before applying the decals and convert the dashboard.

Looking well, I'd totally forgotten about Brookes winning the Irish that year

looks brilliant brian, good work !! my brookes manta yellow is far too light so ill be redoing it in future...tho i know there are several shades used in the cars your colour looks well....nice one

I have one in the making too. How do you get the wheels off an AutoArt and what wheels are you using here?

This is based on one of the cheaper models rory, not an autoart. Wheels here are the standard wheels from the model. I didnt have to remove the wheels at all, screws from base to chassis are easily accessable without taking off the wheels.

Bit of work done on this today, decals applied but need to reprint a logo for each side that was missing from the artwork (think it was in a different layer and didnt get printed).

Needs a clearcoat now before tackling the black trim and assemble it back together

That's sweet, Brian, very sweet.

Some more work on this the past few days. Decals on the body completed with clearcoat added. Black trim around the windows and black lip on the spoiler finished. Bare metal chrome foil applied behind all the lights which relects the light giving a better sense of depth for the clear parts. All the lights are glued in using formula 50 canopy glue.

Just have glue in the windows, apply sunstrip and decals to the headlights, convert the dash to RHD and apply a few extra pieces to add some detail.

Not quite finished, still some final interior work to do, but it would be a shame to let the great weather today pass by and not get a few pictures in.
Still need ton convert the dash to RHD, add some PE wipers, belts and bonnot pins, all of which are in storage and cant get to with the Covid 19 restrictions.

Everything about this is pure class. Well done

Incredible stuff. Looks even better than the real think. Used to have a poster of that car on my wall, which I think was an advert ripped out of Autosport.
