2003 Focus Striped, Decal & Tampo Removal Ixo/Atalya
.
I started to strip one of these for Paul BaseHunterMotorsport tonight and thought I'd take a few photos as I went along,
So here's how I got on, photo first then a wee bit of a write up below it,
Base model I started with,
This is the base model with all the decals removed. anything else on this model is tampo,
To remove the tampo I use cellulose thinners but before starting to do this I need to split the model open and remove a few plastic parts,
Theres only 2 screws holding this model together, when they are removed the floor and interior slides out,
I will need to remove the side & rear windows on this but the dash will have to come out first to let me get at the front of the side window and mirror,
To get the dash out I slid a plain screwdriver under the lug and twisted it, it sometimes helps to use a blade and make a small slice in the plastic first to make the plastic collar open up,
With the dash out you can see the way the window lug is glued on, I use a set of tweezers to nip at the glue to snap it off, then use a filed down screwdriver or pick to push the window lug out,
To get the rear window out I had to slide a blade under the rear spoiler to snap the glue before it would come off, It came off that quick I didnt get any pics but it was the same style as the read window pic's,
With the spoiler off I then had to run the blade along the bottom of the window as it was glued on, then used a screwdriver to pop the window out from the inside just the same as the dash came out,
All the bits removed and in the case to keep them safe + the tools I used,
Next was to remove the blue paint from the rear,
I got a bit of paper roll and cut a strip about 8" long & 1.5" wide then folded it up to be the same size as the quarter panel,
When it was the right size I poured on some thinners, just enough to soak it but not dripping off it, the paper is then pressed on to the model and held for 10 seconds, after this I slide the paper down the panel to wipe off the paint,
As soon as I get to the bottom I turn the paper over to a clean part and wipe off the access, If it stays wet for too long then the white will wrinkle up in the recess and panel gaps,
I done the two quarter panels first then the boot lid and bumper, It's best to let the model sit for about an hour at this stage then redo it again but use less thinners this time as there is less blue to come off,
I've just gave the model another wipe over and remover the tampo from the front wings,
The rear window line along the bottom was painted black again and the two bits where the spoiler is fitted were touched up white,
When the spoiler is glued on these bits will be covered but it is easier to touch them up now in case you see a wee bit of blue later and have to touch it up,
I'll let it sit until the paint drys then build it back up and add the last few pics, should be up in about an hour

Re: 2003 Focus Striped, Decal & Tampo Removal Ixo/Atalya

Cheers Paul,
I let the paint dry on the bits I touched up around the rear window and spoiler, then started to build it back up,
Building it back up is a lot easier than striping it!!
I put the rear window back in and set a bit of glue on the lugs to hold it in place, then did the same with the side windows,
When the windows were fitted the next thing to go in was the dash, this just clicks in to place and was hit with a bit of glue the same as the windows, the interior and floor were set in and the two screws fitted,
As this model has no roof decal to be fitted I could go ahead and glue the aerial back on, also on the roof the camera box was removed so the hole had to be filled,
I used a tooth pick to fill the hole by pushing it in as I turned it, almost screwing it in, then lay a blade flat and cut it flush with the roof,
When it was cut I set a bit of white paint on top just to colour the tooth pick, as it drys it sinks into the wood and needs touched up again,
I'm sure there are other ways of filling holes but this way was quick and easy + the model wasn't getting a respray,
The last thing to do is paint the rear spoiler and fit it back on but I'll have to wait until tomorrow to paint the spoiler

Here's the last few pic's of this model,
I had to paint the rear spoiler black to cover the tampo decal that was on the sides + there were red fins on the spoiler,
If I had of tried to use the thinners on the spoiler it would have melted it so a few quick coats of black was the easy way out,
The spoiler splits in to two parts and was easy to paint, after the paint had dried I glued it back on and set the model tight to one of my turntables to hold it in place,
The only thing to finish this model is the window decals, they seem to be tampo so T-Cut will remove them,
I've no T-Cut here so Paul can remove them

I'm glad you said you were changing the wheels,
The paint was soft and I marked them, If you were going to use them on another model I can replace them
